Build Log: Ninjago Legacy Lighthouse

Far off on the outskirts of Ninjago’s Endless Sea, the Lighthouse Prison rises from the depths.  Not only is it the scene of Dr. Julien’s (Zane’s “Dad”) captivity, it was also a temporary refuge for Jay and Nya in their attempt to escape from the Djinn Nadikhan.

Most of my building time for this MOC went into that monstrous chunk of rock!  With four corners to round out, keeping the angle up to the lighthouse was no easy task!

I started with the stairs, so that I could have a general idea of the height the rock needed to reach.  Also, with a platform already built toward the top, I could make sure the rockwork didn’t encroach on the lighthouse’s footprint!

After a day or two of rock building, about half of the front facade was done.

Behind the deceptively solid wall of rock is a motley array of clips and mixel joints.  As the rock gets taller, it becomes progressively less stable until it’s finally connected to something on top.  Loosing essential cheese slopes or such small pieces in the bowels of the MOC is part of the experience.

Dozens of dark grey slopes and a few light grey pieces later, the lighthouse was completed!

  1. This is a great guide to big rocks 🙂 thanks, I’d wondered how people got the slanted look going.

    1. Thanks! Clips are invaluable for single dimensional slants and if you want to slant in multiple directions, mixel joints are the way to go! I did that in the front left corner–be warned, it’s pretty hard to incorporate smoothly!
Here you can see behind the front left. A bit wild back in there!
