Build Log: Soccer Player

Recently I built my first attempt at a large(ish) brick-built figure: a soccer player. For this creation, I took a lot of inspiration from Gabe’s top notch sculptor. I didn’t feel capable of figuring out all the proportions on my own!

The build took me less than a day, and went smoother than I had anticipated!

I started building at the bottom. Some builders start with the most complex parts of their creation, or their favorite parts… but about 90% of the time I start at the bottom and build up from there; it helps me keep my focus.

After I figured out the shoes, I played around with several knee designs, finally settling on this one, which uses chairs in light yellow/tan. The handy thing about these is that they help cover the inevitable gap that opens up when the figure’s knee is flexed.

The inside of the torso includes some complex SNOT (studs-not-on-top) techniques to get a smooth surface on both sides.

My first torso design was highly textured, and I thought it looked way too much like an undershirt.

So I tore a lot down and tried to make the figure less beefy–it’s supposed to be a soccer player, not a football player!

After that, I reworked it once again to throw in some red stripes and a number one!

Of course, getting this picture also took a good deal of editing. The grass is from my own backyard, and I cut the figure out of a dark green background. After that I used the blur tool around the edges of the figure–a trick I discovered last year!
