Build Log: Lighthouse Lamp

Lighthouses are fascinating–they’re so tall, and solitary–they inspire you with a feeling of confidence and safety. I don’t know if that’s why my mom loves lighthouses, or if there’s some other reason, but I know she has not-so-secretly wanted a LEGO lighthouse for a long time. So I finally built her one!

This lighthouse took me about five days to build. I started with a small desk lamp with an LED bulb. The idea of using an actual lamp inside the lighthouse came from Bob de Quatre’s fun lighthouse lamp creation.

After semi-dismantling the lamp, I fit into a base, using pink bricks as filler and some tires to keep the lamp in place.

Then the rock started to grow up around the base, and I designed the lighthouse tower.

I thought about using red and white–classic lighthouse colors–but black looks so elegant. And since this is meant to be a display piece, I felt like the darker tone would be easier to match with other things in the room.

I found an airjitzu bubble while I was looking in my transparent pieces for something that would do for the light, and it was perfect! It certainly does reduce the light given off by the lamp a little, but there’s still plenty of light, and a great yellow effect!

After finishing up the rockwork and adding a bit of texture to the tower, we ended up with this:

The model is fully presentable from every side. Which, in case you were wondering, most of my models are not…
